Onions are produced in Mooketsi, Polokwane, Pontdrift, Riebeek Wes and Ceres. ZZ2 is the only producer of onions in the country that can claim to have year-round production. In the winter months the Limpopo Lite onion is produced in the North and in the summer the Cape Brown onion is produced in the South. The Limpopo Lite is light in colour, slightly pungent and with a tangy taste. The Cape Brown onion is a beautiful dark brown colour that is fantastic for cooking or can be used raw in salads.

Health benefits

Dry onions are a surprising source of fibre and a rich source of healthy sulphur compounds, similar to those found in garlic. Onions appear to have cardiovascular benefits, such as reducing blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels, at least in the short term. Onions also contain phytochemicals called flavonoids, which help vitamin C in it function, improving the integrity of blood vessels and decreasing inflammation. One particular flavonoid, quercetin, may inhibit tumour growth and help keep colon cancer at bay.

Onions also contain vitamin C and chromium. Chromium is a mineral that helps cells respond to insulin, ultimately assisting with blood glucose control.
